Rosemary and tyme tv3/14/2023 Rosemary Boxer (played wonderfully by Felicity Kendal) and Laura Thyme (played even better if possible by Pam Ferris) meet by chance as the latter's husband is deserting her. Well, we still have the long-running "Midsomer Murders" and the more recent "The Last Detective". All indications are that after 3 seasons (03, 04, 06/07) and 2 specials (04, 05), R&T are through. From 2003 to 2007 we were treated to the wonderful "Rosemary and Thyme". This first decade of the 21st Century is no exception. The problem is that good Brit mysteries outnumber Yank ones as the Chinese outnumber the Brits. This is really good grunge and grit, especially if you want Brit quality instead of slipshod Yank stuff that uses gratuitous violence to distract you from the vapidity of what you're watching. If you actually like urban grunge and gritty plotting, but want something from the Brits in that line, there's always Helen Mirren's "Prime Suspect". Genteel, engaging, beautifully filmed, this was everything a good mystery ought to be. Readers may also recall the spectacular success of "Murder She Wrote", set among the rural beauty of the Murder Capital of New England, Cabot Cove. They also omit gratuitous violence (tiresome) and profanity (even more tiresome). Virtually all of the main characters in superb series such as "Bones" and "Numbers" consist of nerds who actually use 3- and 4-syllables (and bigger) words. Even so, the Brit example is starting to sink in on this side of the pond. Yank mysteries are often written as if the main audience consists of cave men. Part of the reason for this is that Brit mysteries are genteel and intelligent. This trend started with Conan Doyle and continues right down to the present moment. It's well known that Brits generally do murder better than Yanks (or anyone else, for that matter). And I love the way British TV has realistic, believable women who aren't babes in leads. There are a lot worse shows on American TV, no need to dump on this if it isn't to one's taste. When it is on public TV on Mystery night, I watch it. When I see such unnecessary venom on a review, it makes me wonder if the writer were rejected for a job on the show or was dumped by someone on the show. It isn't necessary to put it down with such rancor. I like this, consider myself well read and educated, etc but I can see not everyone will like everything. There are so many shows that are completely plot driven, with high tech effects but the character has no basis in real life that make this gentle show refreshing. This is not a blood and cuts, men shooting at men, plot driven macho show. I think the women gardeners who end up being detectives are believable characters, who use intuition, common sense, keen perceptions of character, as well as their knowledge of horticulture, to solve crimes. Well this may not be to the taste of everyone but it isn't as dreadful as the previous poster says at all.
